Parenting Challenge (II) - Severe Myopia "No More"
Inculcating good habits in another person is certainly an uphill battle for me everyday as my ever so well-recognised patience is truly badly broken down in this process. Hence my awake hours as a parent is a constant nightmare to me that I prefer my dreams while I am napping or sleeping. Here are some examples of my 365 daily echoes(x 5 years) that make me feel worse than the uncertain eerie music produced from the winding gramophone.
"Can you look out of the window when in the car and stop doing something?"
"Can you hold your book further from your eyes....you looked like you are going to join Alice inside the book?"
"Can you lift up your head when you write?" - just short of me putting a bamboo stick behind and hanging her from the bamboo stick to achieve the correct writing posture
"Can you not read in the dark?" Arrrrrrrrrrrggggggggh
"Can you look at the beautiful scenaries around you instead of burying your head in the books?"
"Can you take a break?"
Did I name my child "Numbskull"? It would probably be easier on me if I did....at least I can get a deedpoll done and think that this bout of bad habits behaviour will go away together with a bad name.
In no uncertain terms, news from kindy came about at 4 plus(K1) that she needed glasses. Upon further checking at HPB, her degree was about 100 on both sides and due to her very special physique of a tiny face, there were no glasses suitable, except infant glasses!!
Finally I had the last laugh I thought....someone had to put on infant glasses. Then HPB advised that since kindy did not require looking at a black or white board, it was not necessary to get a prescribed pair of glasses early. Trusting the professional, I took their advice. Kindy year 2 end, she failed her eye-test again naturally because she had no glasses on. However, the degree had climbed to close to 200 degrees.
During her birthday that year, we met an old friend with a son wearing glasses too. So I took down her recommendation and went out to seek the glasses suitable for my child. Soon she had this plastic sitting on her nose bridge to begin her journey in P1. During the health check, she failed the eye test again?!?!?!?! The power had gone up again, if only that was her inner strength to correct the bad habits that had gone up. Another pair of lenses was changed. A few months later one day, she came home with one side of her lenses broken. Amazing....how did she break plastic? Again her outer strength superceded her inner strength... Now inner strength...where are you?
Health check in P2 failed again....so we went back to the optical shop and got the eyes checked.... over 400 degrees!!!
How I wished this was the stock market news! I did a quick simulation in my mind....at this rate, she would hit 1000 degrees before PSLE. I imagined the concentric rings with a few mm thick glasses sitting on her tiny nose like 林亚珍, the very thought jolted me back to reality. What do I do with this blind bat?
Then one day, I saw a red cape flew over my head, was it an angel sent from heaven? No, it was Supermom 2ppaamm. .
She had five kids and they were on this technology called Ortho-K which helped to control the power from climbing in the eyes. I feel the euphoria if my child has the power to climb Himalayas but this power of climb has to be curbed. After the first consultation, we were convinced that this was the best way to help her control the power of climb but I still needed a remedy for the removal of bad habits...anyone???
It has been 3 months since she was on this lenses. The magic of having perfect eye-sight during the day is enough good benefits for this. However, the greater benefit for us is the last eye check shows that the degree in the eyes have not gone up at all! This is probably the best news of the year for me!! Power of climb is finally under control.....save that for rock-climbing, a much more fun activity.
It has its tedious moments like my day and night is very much integrated with her life like breast feeding because I am enslaved to putting on and removing the lenses daily for her now, plus cleaning it thoroughly. At least for breast-feeding, it can be expressed and fed offline from the mother if required. Anyway, my next challenge is to train her to DIY soon!!

My DD is same like yours
Reading your blog entry, those frustrations that you had with your DD sound exactly like mine. I have become like a broken record singing the same tune to her day in n day out...
Just brought her to check her eyes today after realizing she can't read some direction signs far away. Turns out she is 75 degrees for one eye and 50 degrees for another. Sign! Will probably consider the Ortho K lens as another friend has good experience with it too. However, your having to wash the lens for her is giving me some cold feet. Don't think I could spare that time... when I sometimes don't even have time to clean my own lens... Are there weekly or monthly Ortho K lens to consider?
Lastly, have you managed to get your DD to practise the good reading habits? Look forward to any good suggestions to kick some sense into mine... Haiz.
haha...wonder if all kids are
haha...wonder if all kids are the same or all mums are the same... To answer your question about weekly and monthly ortho-K...no, it does not exist. :) However, I notice something for my dd is that due to sufficient sleep, the lenses work very well on her hence she does not have to wear it nightly now. She can wear every 2 nights and have a rest on the 3rd night. That is provided the hours of sleep is at least 8-9 hours a night. The lenses' perfect vision effect can last for more than 24 hours.
As for habits, she does not attempt to read that much in a moving car now. She remembers to clip her reading light to her book in dark places. However, the bending of her head low is still an issue, that takes more time to correct. I suppose the daily wearing of the lenses is a chore for her as well and she constantly laments on why she has to wear lenses. Well, it's all about her choices...right? :)
The good news is her degree has not gone up since she puts on the lenses.
I heard from a friend there is another technology where the prescribed lenses only allow the child to look straight and no where else and it is supposed to help control the degree from escalating or even improve the eyesight. I am not sure what is the name of that but maybe worthwhile to make a comparison. The glasses only worn when needed, not to hang on the face all the time.
The main difference I see in this method is that it does not allow the child to have perfect vision to do sports, but if the degree is not high like your dd's and can be corrected back to perfect vision, it might still be worth considering. My dd's eyesight is beyond hope for this technology. I am doing it so that she would not hit a thousand by P6!! bwaaaah..
I think it is a case of kids
I think it is a case of kids being all the same! Mine not only read in cars and buses, but even as she walks from school to bus-stop, and my helper couldn't stop her though I had told her to call me to inform me. Now I threaten to cut DD's daily allowance if this continues.
Hmm... What reading light are you talking about? Can be clipped to books? We invested in the egonomic table (hope I got the name right) couple of years ago but she seldom does her reading there.
I'm not sure if the Ortho K lens will suit her as she has sensitive eyes (according to the eye doctor). I probably have it too (runs in the family), and years ago when I tried to wear gas permeable lens, I couldn't open my eyes properly... Lol!
Am planning to go Issac. Do you know if they have this new technology lens that you are talking about?
On the Ortho K lens, I thought in some cases, the degree may actually reduce? I remember 2ppaamm said that happened to her kids?
My dd also walks and
My dd also walks and reads....but she gets a earful from me.. She has no regular allowance so nothing to cut.... kekeke
The reading light is like a bookmark, can clip to the book. Tomorrow I ask from her and send you the brand...I don't know where she keeps it now.
They will do a scan and eye check on suitability.
I only know Issac does Ortho-K not sure about the other technology. I know of Issac from a relative but I chose 2ppaamm's contact for convenience.
Yes Ortho K can reduce some degree but not alot, that is, if it permanently reshapes the cornea after the constant wearing.
The earful is not working for
The earful is not working for me... So have to cut where it hurts, and she happens to be greedy for food... Kekeke.
Oh, I thought most people go to Issac, since they have been around for so long and very reputable, especially in prescribing glasses. Know of people who got their glasses there and their short-sightedness managed to stabilize.
Could you pass me the contact that you got from 2ppaamm? Thanks a lot!
Thanks for sharing :)

Why not atropine eye drops instead?
Hi, my girl is un exactly the same condition as yours. I feel like taping a ruler in front of her so she knows how to keep a distance from her books. Her eye doc recommends that she uses atropine drops instead. May I know what convinced you to go for ortho k instead of eye drops? I need to justify the extra costs involved. Can you let me know which eye clinic you went to to fit the lenses? Also, if my girl's eyesight jeeps getting worse despite ortho k, does it mean we have to keep changing lenses? That will cost a bomb right?
Thanks

Hi, sorry for the late reply as I did not see the post until now.
You first question why not atropine drops? I heard it has side effects and it may not work.
As for ortho k, the package I have includes changing lens for a period of 2 years at no extra cost to me.
Based on the ortho-k concept, it compresses the eyeball temporarily to perfection and hence there is perfect eyesight in the day. If there is no straining, it should minimise the possibility of increasing the eyesight degree within a day.
As for place I go to, it was recommended by 2ppaamm, another mum in this forum. I will PM u the contact.
cheers.
Amy and Jiyou
Amy, sent you PM on contact already.
Jiyou, you are right, if it is an adult, should consider Lasik instead of the nightly trouble.
However, some people told me Lasik has its side effects, some get blurred vision in the night, others eyes a little red or teary. I suppose with every treatment, everyone has their own idosyncracies to deal with. So it's best to weigh pros and cons against your own self- constraints to make the right decision.
In my mind, my girl may go for Lasik in future but if it is really not necessary as she prefers this, then she can stick to it as this is non-invasive.
Ortho-K
after reading this article, Ortho-K and lastik cost is about the same. So for adults, should try lastik?

Ortho-K (smum n Yerdua)
We first went for the consultation by doing a cornea scan. Not everyone is suitable for the Ortho-K, there is a suitable index that the shape of the cornea needs to fall into. There are also other special conditions not suitable like severe astigmatism. So a check is first necessary.
Ortho-K is supposed to be non-intrusive. Its risks is associated with cleanliness like that of wearing hard lenses. It is exactly like hard lenses in the way it is being handled, so cleaning is an important process otherwise there might be infection like everything else. Should the child want to take a break from Ortho-K just stop wearing for more than 24 hours, the perfect vision effect will go away and the original degree resumes, then glasses can be used again. So it is non-intrusive. It temporarily helps to achieve perfect vision and at the same time controls myopia from worsening. Those people with very dry eyes may find it uncomfortable to sleep in it.
Ortho-K works by shaping the cornea perfectly for perfect vision while you are sleeping, so it is only a temporary measure in terms of myopia correction. The reason why the lenses need to be worn every night before sleeping is because the cornea will spring back to its original shape gradually, hence the myopia returns.
One deterant for many people is the cost. The cost of Ortho-K can cost from $1500-$2500 depending on the difficulty of making the lenses for the cornea. So pray that your child has a common-shape cornea. A pair of lenses can last for 2.5 years, and the next investment would be reduced if we return to the same specialist.
Did I miss out anything?
Can i have more details on
