Breastfeeding ability governed by hormones
New mothers who find it hard to breastfeed their babies, have no need to feel guilty .
A Norwegian study found that difficulty in feeding a newborn can be due to the higher levels of male hormone in womb during pregnancy. After reviewing all the available evidence, researchers from Norwegian University of Science and Technology said, mothers who find breastfeeding so hard should not feel guilty. They said the difficulty in feeding a newborn may be because of the higher levels of the male hormone testosterone in womb during pregnancy.
"Basically a mother who finds she has difficulty shouldn't feel guilty, probably is just the way it is, and her baby will not suffer for being fed formula milk," the BBC has quoted lead researcher Prof Sven Carlsen as saying. "A mother should do what makes her happy," he said. He argued that it is the hormone balance in the womb which explains both a mother's ability to breastfeed and any apparent health benefits of a baby who is breastfed rather than the breast milk itself.
Why and how to breastfeed your baby
Breastfeeding is the first step in motherhood and can be overwhelming because you want everything to go just right.
While your doctor and well-wishers will give you tons of advice on what to do and what not to do, you can never be sure of anything until, of course, you actually start breastfeeding. Here are some simple tips that will help you breastfeed effectively and for as long as your child demands it.
- Begin breastfeeding about an hour after your delivery.
- Hold your baby the right way while breastfeeding. Hold your baby's tummy towards your stomach and your baby's chin to your breast.
- Your baby's mouth should cover your entire nipple, especially the areola.
- Don't let your baby feed from just one breast. Switch side the moment your baby falls off one breast.
- Rub a few drops of breast milk onto your nipples and let it air dry. This prevent your nipples from getting too dry and cracking.
- It is essential to drink lots of water and follow a good diet recommended by your doctor.
- Avoid medication while breastfeeding, unless advised by the doctor.
Childcare is for mothers, helps marriage too
A study has suggested a minimum role for fathers in childcare, especially for pre-school kids, besides stating that the families where mothers single-handedly take care of tasks like feeding and bathing witness less conflicts.
The fathers should spend more time playing with their children, the research study conducted by Ohio State University further states.
The results of the Ohio State University study do not surprise Relationships Australia (New South Wales) acting chief executive officer Lyn Fletcher, who said mothers often found it difficult to "give up control" of care-giving duties for their children even if they say they want their partner's help.
"It's not about the fathers doing those tasks, it's how they do them," The Daily Telegraph quoted Fletcher as saying.
"Mothers are often very definite about the way they think things should be done in relation to caring for their children.
"If she thinks the father is not doing things to the standard she would, then it can lead to conflict.

For mothers whose child is diagnosed with autism
My dd1 was also diagnosed to be ASD when she was about 3yo. It turned dh and my world outside down. Life was never the same after that. I can still recall the anguish and turmoil that we went thru. And yet, the diagnosis helped to explain the many "mysteries" surrounding her behaviour.
The positive thing is that, in discovering early, you can start your child on early intervention. This is very important as it will help her and your family cope with AS much more effectively
The Benefits Of Childcare Services
Dear all anxious mums new to CCCs, I feel a compelling need to share this with the mums who have caregivers that are maids, relatives, in-laws and have not yet exposed the kids to CCCs. This is a personal experience in which I hope others will not have to make the same mistake as I did.
