Ministry of Education Investiture Ceremonies for the 2011 National Day Awards
862 nominees from the Ministry of Education (MOE) and educational institutions were awarded the National Day Awards in 2011, of whom 185 officers were awarded the Commendation Medal, 65 were awarded the Efficiency Medal, and 542 were awarded the Long Service Medal.
The recipients include 65 officers who were earlier conferred the Public Administration Medal in November 2011. Of these, 2 officers received the Gold Medal, 20 received the Silver Medal and 43 received the Bronze Medal.
The Commendation Medal is awarded to selected officers who have demonstrated efficiency, competence and devotion to duty for special performance under difficult circumstances. The Efficiency Medal is given to selected officers who have made contributions leading to higher work productivity in their field of work. The Long Service Medal is presented to public officers with at least 25 years of service in recognition of their service contributions to Singapore.
MOE will hold its Investiture Ceremony over two sessions. Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Education, will officiate the first session on 2 February 2012. Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister of State, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Education, will officiate the second session on 20 February 2012.
The Ministry congratulates all recipients and thanks them for their contributions.
Launch of Stories Teachers Tell
Primary school students can now look forward to reading stories written by Singapore teachers in class from 2013. Twelve stories, selected from 200 entries in the first story-writing competition, Stories Teachers Tell, will be available in two compilations (for 7-9 year olds and 10-14 year olds) and will be launched by Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat today. The list of prize-winners is in the Annex (66kb .pdf).
The story-writing competition, co-organised by the Academy of Principals (Singapore) and the Ministry of Education last year, aims to encourage teachers to write stories they have always wanted to tell – stories about Singapore that will excite and engage their students. It also fosters the creation of English language materials to support the teaching of reading, and is the beginning of a collection of Singaporean stories for children to read for interest and enjoyment.
Stories Teachers Tell connects the teachers and students through shared experiences, offering the potential of these stories to support values education – to help children understand themselves, their families and the wider environment in which they live. When all students can imagine themselves as having things in common with the characters in the stories they read – that these adventures could happen to them – then they become more excited and engaged with what they read. This positive engagement is a crucial step towards building fluency, comprehension and critical appraisal of what is read.
Stories Teachers Tell also supports and encourages teachers to grow creatively. Involving teachers in the production of learning materials is deliberate as teachers have an in-depth knowledge of the curriculum and how it relates to their teaching objectives.
This year, the competition will also have an open category for students and members of the public to contribute their stories. The competition this year also hopes to attract more contributions suitable for the pre-school and upper secondary levels. Stories can be submitted via email to stories@aps.sg. The contest starts on 2 February 2012 and will close on 31 May 2012.
